I agree. I think we should write skype support and ask them to simply what they
broke. lol! I have there direct support address someware.

also just to shorten things a bit
when in the edit box of the conversation that you want to add someone too
just press command shift and letter A, this will bring up the same dialog from
the add people in the toolbar

I've found that there are a couple steps in your description that can be done
differently and that could be a time saver.
Instead of searching for the "add people" button, just hit cmd+shift+a then in
the edit box provided, type a name or parts thereof, the table will shrink down
to the choi
