sign out of icloud on old macbook air 2018
Try going to System Settings > Apple Account.
If running macOS Sonoma (14.x) this maybe still called Apple ID.
Failing to sign out of iCloud, will not cause you to lose your data.

I don't think you understand. Your iCloud data is not on your computer, it is
in the cloud.
Wiping your computer will not affect data that is in iCloud.

Why are you making a Time Machine backup if you are just going to wipe the Mac?
What purpose does that serve?

Hi all:
I'm trying to get my old Macbook air 2018 ready to trade in. I'm running in
to a problem. Sign out button is grayed out on the icloud settings in system
preferences. HELP! I need to make sure I can erase my mac without losing my
data in icloud.
Screen time is off. I've restarted the Mac.
I do not want to lose iCloud data from the cloud such as my photos.
