The problem is that i don’t use threading at all.
But can it be the classic view maybe?

is that your 74 messages are a mix of single messages and threads, and the
threads are adding to the total.

I have a strange problem when deleting a bunch of mail at the same time.
I use to use the option command shift up arrow when selecting mails from where
i am to the top.
Now for example voiceover can say that 76 items are selected.
