The voiceOver W command did change from Mojave to Catalina along with the rotor commands. In every version of VoiceOver Macintosh before Catalina, VO-W is used to say word. In current MacOS versions it is "Read Visible text". Still not quite sure how this is different from VO-A "Read the conten
