Can't you just navigate to messages in the extras menu, open it with
VO-Space and select offline?

I went in and went to preferences, and located the gmail or apple Id that I
have messages sent too on the mac, and unchecked it, and clicked disable
account. When I want to restart it, I reverse the process. Hope that helps.
