If you were able to format the drive with disk utility then it seems like your hard drive is actually ok. You can also check the drive hardware pre-failure status from the terminal by doing diskutil info disk0 | grep SMART which should report SMART Status: Verified That means, as far as the

Thanks for the very helpful information. I wanted to try a few things before buying a $99 program to fix the disk. I restored my drive from my Superdooper backup and it doesn't work better when I boot up from the internal hard drive. I used disk utility to erase the drive before the restore.
