It should work just fine every time, even with QuickNav turned on, you can
still use shift-arrow keys to select/deselect cells.

Shift+arrow keys is the right way to do it. Interact once with the table,
navigate using your arrow keys to where you want to start selecting, hold down
the shift key and move vertically or horizontally until you have them selected.

I am curious if anyone has a set of instructions for selecting a range of cells
in iWork '09 Numbers.
It does not appear to be possible to select cells by using either shift plus
arrow keys or shift + VO + arrow keys.
