What led to the PRAM reset was that while trying to work out the VO-shift-z issue, the system stopped responding to commands, getting the klunk sound. I had to do a forced shutdown. I've a mid 2012 MBP. Would love another newer Mac to see if a certain audio issue was still present but its no
