You are correct Jonathan. What you're actually doing on the newer Macs is
resetting the nvRAM. An extra note as well, there's actually a Terminal
command whereby you can reset the nvRAM.

startup with no sound issues. You always see folks suggesting to do this, but I
rarely have seen anybody declare recently that this actually solved an issue.

VO-shift-c doers that and works still. Its VO-shift-z that no longer
works for me under Sierra and I cannot find where to check if it got
changed somewhere in preferences. The command works in High Sierra.
