If you've opened a widget more than once without closing it, you'll have to
repeat this procedure until doing cmd-vo-escape just pings at you and brings up
no choices. Or you can check to see if you are still in a widget each time you
close. It's possible to really accumulate them if you haven't

I remember listening to a David Woodbridge podcast on this topic on
applevis.com. It was done in Lion, and Mountain Lion changed one of the
keystrokes - I can't remember which one. Check out the podcast., the crucial
keystroke changed from one of the modifiers. like from command x to control x
