I tend to agree, but casual users and newbies often get into trouble by
installing apps, plugins, and add-ons that, while not viruses, are deeply
annoying. Virus programs tend NOT to remove those, so your browser starts
offering ads, pop-up, and search results that verge on the abusive.

I would not waste my time with antivirus software at this point. Really good
safe computing practices are as important if not more than running some
software. Depending on how your using your computer if you’re computing safely
and only dealing with known entities you should be good.

I was a bit hesitant to try Adware Medic at first, but it looks as if
the company who makes it has recently been acquired by Malwarebytes.
I've used both Eset and Malwarebytes on my Windows machine in the
past, and I have been satisfied with the level of protection.
