Hey, I still use the novelty voices - I use one to tell time, for example.

Hello joseph,
You already have this with Snow Leopard, and it's a user preference, so you can
have different users with different languages.
Check system preferences, languages and text.
What we don't get with SL are non-english voices, so long live the Lion King :-)

Yes, and in the Windows version there is no inflection, and no way to hear
punctuation when reading continuously if you need to do that for some
reason.

I doubt ole alex is getting the elbow from apple. They have novelty voices and
other stuff like fred that is still about from the 80s, so given the way they
like to keep stuff alex has a long way to go before getting a divorce from
apple.

Right,
And I'm assuming the voices on the Mac would be at a significantly higher bit
rate than those found on IOS. So you can't really say they will sound worse
just based on how they sound on the IOS platform.

I agree. Sometimes I'd rather have her reading something to me. And I'm sure
they'll improve her on the mac.

Heres another point of view.
I want elequence when I read - booksense, stream, etc. No, stop with those real
sounding voices, I want doubletalk, I want voices that don't pause at random. I
want doubletalk or elequence. Good thing I have 4 book ports...oh, and 60 hours
of battery life.
Sorry fo
Yep, I always thought Samantha for the I devices sounded a bit snobbish. I have
this image of what she'd look like in my head, I won't go into it, but it
cracks me up every time.

For what it's worth, I failed to find the samples as well. I saw the
article text, but nothing about flash or samples, just advertisements
above the article and unrelated information below.

Hi all,
For one thing, the voices on the mac will be of a higher quality than on iOS.
Apple insider has samples of the voices. I didn't think much of Jill, but
samantha sounded better than she has on any previous platform, and tom was just
fabulous. I think Tom has a good chance of replacing al

they some how made the samantha voice very crisp and bright. She sounds better
then on the ios device. Alex also sounds more bright as well.

Hi Scott,
I looked for the links for the voice samples and did not find them. The tuaw
article has a link to the source, and that source supposedly had links for
samples. I went there, found the article and the link to comments but not the
voice links. Where did I go wrong?

Guys relax. I heard a sample of the voices and sorry I should have posted the
article, but someone will. I have to say the new voices sound great and
certainly no worse than Alex. So, I think we're going to be in for a real
treat. In fact the voices will be a download option as well, so you won'
Well, voices are totally subjective, and I can't speak for other languages, but
I'd much rather have US espeak than tom or samantha. To me those voices sound
like complete garbage.
Every ear is different though. Some of my clients love those voices.
Personally I think it will be a grand day
Oh come on, the scansoft voices ain't so bad, be thankful it isn't espeak or
Orpheus. I for one think that the swedish scansoft voices are way way better in
terms of language treatment than the Infovox ones.

I am not a mac user, but I, too, emailed apple about porting Alex over
to the iOS platform since he sounds so much better than Karen or
Samantha. I hope they do not get rid of him, and I doubt they will. I
heard a rumor (a tweet, actually) that he has been improved in the
newest 10.7 beta; not quit
Hi Mary:
I recently wrote to Apple Accessibility regarding voicing. I inquired about
the possibility of the Alex voice being made available for the iPad. The
response I got was encouraging in that Accessibility indicated they had gotten
a lot of good feedback about Alex, and they couldn't comm
Hi Mary,
I highly doubt Apple will retire Alex. They invested a great deal of time and
money into producing a high quality voice. It would seem wasted to remove it
now.
Best,
Zack.
