For anybody that finds this too difficult, I have an Applescript that does this
for you that works in both Yosemite and ElC. Since it uses UI Scripting, I need
to distribute it as an app.
In any case, just let me know at jon.c.c...@gmail.com if you want a copy of the
application.

That was so easy. I had been trying to do it using the instructions from the
past using the trackpad.

Spoke too soon. Command shift p does the same thing. Is there a
permanent way to hide the preview pane?
