Hello Denise,
When you want to download a new voice, select it in the table, then click on OK
and it will download automatically.

I always get rid of the preview pane by placing the VO cursor on the horizontal
splitter, bringing the mouse to it, and double clicking with the trackpad. This
allows me to choose which messages I want to open, and to skip those I don't. I
read a message by pressing Return, and VO

i probably have classic view selected but i notice that there is a partial
reading of the message. is there another setting i need to turn off? thanks.

To change to Classic View, open Mail Preferences, select Viewing and the first
item is the check box for Classic View.
To get more voices, open VO Utility, go to the Speech category and open the
Default Voice menu (VO-Space). Go down to the last item, Customize, and press
REturn.
