While your suggestion works, it's a real slow-down, as far as work efficiency
is concerned. What I find particularly frustrating is the fact that, until
yesterday, this problem had never occurred. I am at a real loss to figure out
what changes I could have made to make this problem

The other thing that sometimes causes this is how the cursors follow each
other. You can turn off cursor tracking while in the Sidebar and it will stop
this behaviour.
