I tried the LAN and it gave me the same trouble. Went back to 10.6.4.

I updated yesterday and have been on the computer off and on all day with no
issues whatsoever concerning Wi-Fi.

As you probably discovered from ascertaining the ip address, under system
prefferences -> network, there's a box labeled "Show AirPort status in menu
