I can confirm that I have also seen this behaviour.
I have a macbook pro and Lion.
I to have found no way to restore sound after it goes silent. The
laptop appears to be functioning perfectly apart from sound not working.
I have also confirmed that the sound is neither muted or vo
I wasn't talking about losing Voice Over, even though that happens too. I meant
sounds in general. For example, I have internet radio playing in my headphones.
Then when I unplug the headphones, I have no sound whatsoever until I reboot. I
don't think I have dust in the jack as Ricardo suggested
I have that problem with my Macbook Air running Lion. Turning VO off and on
again brought it back. I still had system sounds and braille, but no voice.

I just had this happen yesterday and I'm still running Snow Leopard. A reboot
fixed it. I was playing Audio Quake at the time and VoiceOver was *NOT* on.
Guess it'll still be a potential in Lion.

Yes, I have. I have to keep starting Voice Over. Had same problem using SL.
