I don't think there is one. You can definitely assign one though through
keyboard, or numpad commander. If you have your trackpad commander turned
on, then it's the same thing, 3 finger double tap.

No no. He doesn't want to totally turn off Voiceover. He's just wanting to
simply mute speech.

I had to enable built in trackpad to get speech back on since I have
an external trackpad which was not in use. Strange. I may create that

The three-finger double tap turns speech off, not VoiceOver. There is no
keyboard shortcut for this, but you can create one. The command is called Mute
Speech Toggle and is in the Audio menu.
