that is, with the Get Info window, your mp3s will always open with VLC if you
choose that app.

Hi. On further investigation, I have found that choosing other from open with
and selecting vlc still only opens that particular file. If you open another
mp3 file, it opens with iTunes. There doesn't appear to be a way on the mac to
say only open mp3 files with vlc and no other app.

Thanks. At least that way, when I open an p3, vlc will open it instead. That
should keep it out of my iTunes library.
Odd; because the windows version of iTunes doesn't do this.

If you want VLC or any other program to open an mp3, simply go to open with and
choose "other". In that dialog, you can choose the application and check the
box to have it do this from now on.
I don't believe there's a way to play files in ITunes without adding them to
the library.
