Nope, nothing like that. I think the reader's a bad job.

If it shows up in disk utility, you can probably delete and recreate the
partition.

Sounds like the mac is at least recognizing it, if that didn't work, nothing
else would either. If you go in to disk utility, what disks and drives show up
in the table?

Sorry, no windows here. I have a PacMate which has Pocket PC on it, but it
chokes when I give it a 4G CF card, and I can't find a format option anywhere
there. No other windows exists. :)

Can you do it in Windows? I had to do my in Windows. I just did it as
FAT32 and all of a sudden, the cards could be read fine on the Mac. I'm not
suggesting this will definitely be the solution, but it is what I experienced
to "fix" the issue at the time.

If you can afford to delete the info from the card, I'd try reformatting it
anyway just as an experiment with one of the cards. It definitely could be the
reader itself, but I would try to make sure it's that before you throw away the
bath water with the baby.

Oh, so the answer to your question would be that it's Probably a FAT32 format.

The card, in my PacMate, shows up as having an old version of my "Documents,"
folder, with some stuff deleted, which came from my Mac's HD, and at one point
the USB reader did show up on the desktop with the card in. Right now, I can't
even reformat the thing, which is all I really want to do--
Ar the cards formatted in Windows, by chance? If so, what format? I ask
because I had a similar problems with SD cards and a reader. Once I
reformatted the cards, they suddenly showed up. I had to format them in FAT32
in Windows, but they all worked.
