The VoiceOver key for pausing speech is the Control key. This has nothing to do with what you have selected as the VO modifier. While pressing another key may or may not stop speech, is another issue entirely. You can test this by enabling Keyboard Help, by pressing VO + K, and pressing CTRL, to
