I’m not sure how it’s restricted in terms of drive selection, but I can assure
you that it only block erases CD-RW discs. You can’t accidentally destroy
filesystems on physical disks with it, for instance.

Yeah, you’ll have to use drutil from Terminal. For a quick erase the command
would be:
drutil erase quick
And the full erase:
drutil erase full
