I've resolved my problem. I went to the ~/library/caches/helpd folder and
deleted it. Then, instead of simply logging out and back in as I'd done before,
I restarted my computer. That seems to have done the trick. So if you have a
persistent no-go from help, give this a try.

I'm still having this problem. I can get to the help topics through the Apple
website, but not from help itself.. I googled this and found some instructions
for deleting the help cache from my library. I did this, emptied the trash,
logged back in, and no go. Any other ideas?

Thanks, Harry and Max. Yes, I checked each time I got the error message and I
was indeed connected to the internet. I'll assume the servers were busy. I'm
sure that's a strong possibility.
