VLC definitely plays mkv files once they are extracted.

they told me it only rips from DVD or can copy DVDs, but will not convert from
other formats into a DVD disk.

Hi Brian,
I have it, but I can’t figure out how you burn a DVD disk. I can rip from a
DVD, but hell if I can figure out how you take a file and burn it to DVD.

Hey John, Not sure of the format you are looking to convert from but pretty
sure Mac DVD Ripper Pro could do it as they list a ton of formats and I know
you can rip to DVDs although I have only ripped from DVDs check it out as it
seems to be fully accessible and the developer is very responsive.
