Hi Chris,
Thanks for sending such a detailed response. This has turned out to be much
more complicated than I had anticipated. :)
At the moment I'm leaning toward option A, as I'm new to this, and it seems the
simplest solution.
Cheers,

Macs for quite some time, have had a headphone output jack and a "Line
Input" jack. There are generally three levels of sound signals. First
are the very weak ones like microphones, then line level like the output
from a nice CD player or tape deck and then high powered
speaker/headphone levels
Hi Terje,
No worries, I get you. :)
It's kind of a bummer. I have a really nice mic, but of course, it connects
via the 3.5 jack. (Figures). I would be interested in anyone's recommendation
for a USB mic. I want to record music, so will want a mic suited for that.
Cheers,
Donna

Hi Donna, got you. Just kidding with «du you get me». Looks like usb is the
only option. Many people here that can suggest a good usb mic. Otherwise amazon
should have many reviews from users. Review usb mic on youtube may be an
alternative.
Take care

That’s because your Mac, like all modern Macs, and the iMac I’m typing this on,
doesn’t support combination input/output anymore.
You’re right: an absolute disgrace. It simply never occurred to me that they’d
do something quite this stupid. :(
I’ll file this one under “All Macs are iPads now”.
Terje,
Yes, that is certainly how it looks. This was a real miss on Apple's part,
IMHO.

Did you visit System Preferences, Sound, Input tab, and make sure that the
audio is set for use as Line In? Obviously, the audio output from the mic will
need to be good enough for you to hear it if you’re going to use VO during this
process. But once it’s done, now you should have (line-level
Wow, this is so lame!!! apple does so much to make their devices media
friendly, and then makes the input/output jack virtually useless for anything
other than their own headphones. According to the Google gnomes, the only way
I'm going to record on my MBA is to get a USB sound card or Mic. GR
Yes, there is something about how specific Mac models handle audio input.
You might need to call upon the Google search gnomes to research this.

Hi,
I'm not exactly sure of the details but the 3.5 audio jack on Mac computers is
different from other types of headsets. I think it may have to do with the
audio controls on the Apple headsets.

Strange. I just tried it with a second mic. That one had separate jacks for
input and output. When I plug in the output jack, everything behaves as
expected and the sound from the mac is routed through the headphones. But when
I plug in the input jack, I have the same problem as before. Ver
I’m not sure. I think it might depend on the Mac model and the type of
microphone, but I am far from an audio expert.

No, it connects through the headphone jack. Does it have to be USB?
