Take a look at the connection doctor window in mail. If that can access your
gmail accounts, then it is probably an issue
with take account online or else it could be that the account is still trying
to do an initial syncronization between what is on the computer and what is on
the GMAIL serve
Do you use pop or IMAP? If you use POP settings, you have to enable those using
the website. If Mail automatically suggested the settings, then it's probably
IMAP.
You might try removing the account and then setting it up again.
