I might run in to a situation where for some reason, I have stuff on my iPHone
that I might lose on my Mac and therefore need to do the transfer.

Maybe if you’re working with nuclear secrets or huge financial transactions but
if you’re a regular shmuck like me then probably not worth the effort. You
could take a removable disk and back up and then just slap it in a safe deposit
box if you were really concerned and that’s only $100 or so.
I think I may want to add another layer here. Store a backup device
off the premises, such as a bank vault.
Its an interesting concept but given how much we have invested into
our devices which holds our lives, that extra layer may be a good idea.

If you don't have the password just hit the forgot password button. Use a PC
if you don’t have a mac or any other device. If you’ve lost all the above
options though you have bigger problems than trying to get in to your iCloud
account.

Here is a thought. Worst case scenario. Both Mac and iDevices
unavailable for any number of reasons. Add to the mix the same thing for
local backup devices. So even if one uses the cloud, how will you access
it? Assuming again, worst case scenario, you do not know the password.
Is there
Good point on the passwords Alex, local backup has it’s advantages and cloud
isn’t a bad second. Great point!

That’s why you put it in the cloud, so it doesn’t depend on any one machine.

I'd also suggest iTunes, and encrypting your backup. This brings over health
data, wifi passwords, Twitter/Facebook logins, and most logins on third-party
apps. None of this is backed up in iCloud, and restoring locally is much
faster. Not having looked into it I don't know, but I doubt whether
I might run in to a situation where for some reason, I have stuff on my iPHone
that I might lose on my Mac and therefore need to do the transfer.

Still a very happy Mac,
Why don't you want to back up with ICloud, or with ITunes? Just am curious?
