Thanks very much for this info, Shawn.
These days I'm preferring the smallest and lightest physical unit I can
get packed to the teeth with RAM, CPU, and SSD. So, a 2017 Air might
just be the ticket.

I'm unaware of grub being used as the primary boot loader. I know it can
be a secondary loader, as can the systemd loader.

Hi,
The MacOS version is immaterial to the startup chime. The chime is part of the
basic firmware and hardware check, not an OS feature.

Hi!
It should be configurable as i don’t like it.
THere’s a small sound when you turn your mac on without the bootchime.
Its just a half of a second but you really have to have silence around you to
hear that.
At least that’s what i hear from my mac when i turn it on with no chime.
But i have the
I should've said the 2017 MacBook Air did the startup chime in Mojave which is
what I have.

Hi Janina. In Mojave, the 2017 models did make the startup chime. I'm currently
beta testing Catalina which is 10.15 so I can't say if it's still there or not.

Can Grub be installed on a recent Mac? If so, it might be your solution.
I know their UEFI implementation is non-standard, but it's still a worthwhile
question.

I note that grub offers the option of playing sound. If one wants sound
in a grub mediated boot, one is able to add a directive to provide that.

Hi,
I'm not sure why they removed it either. I've made my noise to some Apple
System Engineers, but really haven't got any traction. There's probably some
firmware level security reason, but I'm not smart enough to know it.

Hi,
The MBP models no longer have the Boot Chime. I have the 2017 model and it
does not have the Boot Chime. I'm pretty sure that all the new release models
no longer have the Boot Chime.

Hi,
I've not heard of such a thing and I really doubt that it will ever be an

believe, from history, that once they move forward with something like the new
design, you're out of luck with them going back.
