If your distro packages it, install open-vm-tools. These are VMWare’s guest
tools ported to particular distributions. VMware encourages this.

It's been quite a while, but I did successfully install VMware on my
Airbook a few years ago using just Voice Over. I don't recall the
details.
PS: I have it on pretty good authority a more fully accessible VMware is
slated for release around September timeframe.
