If you think the sound preferences is still on sound [ which it should be
hopefully]
You can also try [ fn+option+f12] then tab 6 times and you should be on the
sounds mute check box, so vo+space bar and that should do it!

I have lost sound so many times and the only way I could get it back was to
connect my braille display. So if anyone has a shortcut I'd be most interested!

I found it under audio in voiceover help menu, but it's only a toggle. I
can't find the command for turning it on again. I once had this problem and
I solved it by going up and down that list in braille... Perhaps Anne
Robertson or Ester can help us out here.
