Thank you Tim,
Just finished the repair and will let you all know how it responds if there is
more I shouldo I can do that.
I like learning how to maintain and keep the macbook healthy.
Thank you to everyone who has been advising and responding.

Hi Laura,
That time estimate should go down a lot once you get started. It's an
extrapolation based on how the process starts when you repair permissions. I'd
be surprised if it takes anywhere near that long -- or even more than about 20
minutes.
I'm not sure how to give explicit instruction

Hi Laura,
I have a similar system to yours, and it takes less than 10 minutes. I have a
1 Terrabyte drive if that matters, not that much on it.

How long should repairing permissions take and do I need to do anything before
doing that?
It has done this from day one out of the box new.

Oh. nuts. well, there goes that theory. :) Hmmm. repairing disk permissions
would be my next step, as I don't know of any malware that could do it, even
though that's what the behavior sounds like.

I'm running 4G of RAM and a 2.5GHZ processor, and rarely hear Busy more than
once, and it rarely lasts more than a few seconds. I"m wondering if you could
benefit from a hardware upgrade.

Same here. I don't think I've had any busys at all, and startup is a lot
faster. I'm very, very glad I got Mountain Lion!

Hi Alex
I would actually say the opposite. There is less busy busy on my 2011 MacBook
pro with 4 gb ram than in Lion. Start up is
definitely faster and I think VO is a bit snappier.

Has anyone else noticed this? I went through enough of that constant
busy stuff before I got a working monitor. If 10.8 causes those
problems, I don't think I'll be upgrading until they're fixed.
