You have to keep in mind that Face ID is a first gen product like Touch ID was
when it was first released. I love my iPhone X and Face ID works for me.

I got the 8 plus after 5 years with the 5. Its truly s major step
up. I would not concern myself with what might happen down the road. Get
the 8 and take it one day at a time. There is simply too much going on
in the world, we should not spend time worrying about the future.

For Face ID on the iPhone X, double press the power button. Activate Face ID,
then put the iPhone near the reader.
That said, I usually use my Apple Watch because it is more convenient.
