You have set up a proper peer to peer network. There is no need to add a router
into the mix. Macs are able to auto detect ethernet signals without the need of
a crossover cable. Obviously, you can see that it works properly as you said
you can see the shared disk on the other Mac.

Are you saying that it is better to connect to the router rather than
connecting the cable directly between the two computers? Do you by any chance
know why that would be ? I just would like to understand this whole process
better.

Connect the two computers through the router.
Share the drive out to the network, then specify it as the backup for the
second computer not connected directly to it.

Hello,
I want to use a backup drive connected to one of my Mac mini mid 2010 via usb
as a shared drive for the other Mac for it's time machine. I connected the two
computers with an ethernet cable, not via a router but directly. I set the
drive up successfully for the second computer but the
