I have had a similar issue.
But for me all sounds just died.
It happend last sunday but with some help i was able to fix it.
It also happend yesterday and i fixed it buy using headphones.

Thank you all. I had a sudden brain wave. I told Siri to play a song and kept
pressing the volume up and the song and VoiceOver were heard.

You may want to go into settings and check the volume of sounds. Mine keeps
going too low for no reason I can figure. I have a 5 s and every now and then I
have to check the volume and move it up.

Anyone no why, when I hold down the Home Button on my iPhone 5S to access Siri,
VoiceOver works fine. However, if I play a song I get no sound, or exit and
VoiceOver is silent. What do I need to do to turn sounds on? Siri tells me Do
