This might be the difference. I have a Mac Mini with standard keyboard. I
wasn't paying attention to the model of the machine you have; sorry.

Mousekeys interferes with the normal use of the keyboard. This is why I have it
set to be toggled on and off by pressing the Option key 5 times. You certainly
don't want Mousekeys on permanently.

activate mouse Keys, my keyboard becomes unusable. I can't hit enter, or CMD+W
or Q, nothing works as it should. Not even VO+Space bar. I need to untick the
checkbox using my trackpad if I want my Mac to be OK
