I had found the iCloud settings, but didn’t realize that iCloud back up was
buried amongst a list of apps and other features using iCloud. I thought it
would’ve been right up front somewhere.

Hi,
If I'm understanding your question correctly, go into Settings, then double-tap
on your Apple ID, then on iCloud, then down to iCloud Backup. There is an
option to Backup Now. You must be on WiFi for this to engage though. If that
is not what you meant to ask, sorry.

iCloud, and there you will find the backup item.
