I use the tab key to go to the mail preview pane and it reads automatically. I'm having a bit of a problem with consistency but navigation in mail is getting better. Make sure you have quick nav off. It drove me nuts for a while until I realized it had been turned on by mistake. To toggle

Søren, thanks for this info. I don't generally need Mail reading automatically, but I do use it sometimes to get a feel for the message and if I just want to read it on my own, I just start with the arrow keys. I did follow your directions and they worked perfectly. It would seem that when
