First, I believe I have the same settings as you, but I get a little bell sound
on every keypress when CAPLOCK is enabled.
Secondly, I wonder if disabling caps lock in the manner you described would
allow VMWare to pass caps lock through to VM's.

If your in text edit Hi light all the text you want to change and get a
"contextual menu" for it "control option shift m" and find the "
Transformations submenu and choose make lower case.
