Lion, open with, unexpected behavior

Hello, I'm wondering what I may be missing here or if my system is somehow malfunctioning: I have file b.mp3 in Documents/z/. I wish to open b.mp3 with the app of my choosing, rather than open the app first. If I just focus on the file and press shift vo m for a contextual menu, I get Finder
