This is probably what the sales person was confused about. You can get
an Apple iPhone app to control the TV but that's not AppleTV. That said,
this is the battle currently being waged. Should the TV be 'smart' and
support apps, web surfing etc or should it be a dumb screen which you
connect to

Yes the app you have described works ok. There are a lot of unlabeled so it is
very tricky, but if you play around with it you ccan do some things like change
the chanel up and down. HTH.

Correct, however, the TV , connectsTo the house network. If the iPhone and TV
are connected to the same network, and the app is run, the app becomes the
remote for the TV.
