The problem is now solved. Immediately after powering on the iMac I press and
hold the option key for about 30 seconds and then arrow left to select the time
machine disk as the startup volume and press Enter. I then wait about 2 minutes
and then type the encryption password for that dis

Have you tried doing a vo shift down arrow on the username field to then enter
a name or is it just the box
