I didn't have much luck with Fantastical for Mac either. It seemed to work okay
for adding events, but not for reading them back.

If anybody uses Fantastical on the mac and can share some tips, I’d be
grateful. I know that some of you use calendar under Maverick but I can’t work
out how it works. I’ve read through your post
