This is not how I would do it. Since you use optical (I do as well) I would take the signal from the Apple TV to your TV set over HDMI which gives you the highest digital fidelity possible then take the optical out on the back of your TV and route that to your receiver. Then anything heard on

The new Apple TV, which isn't even available to purchase yet, has dropped the optical audio out. So the only option is to get your audio via HDMI or send it to an airport express with optical audio outputs. They did add 7.1 surround sound if you're really into that home theater sound setup. C
