Make sure you're running the latest OS, 10.9.3.
I had issues with Apple mail and my google account for months, and spent
literraly dousing of hours with apple support on cases related to this.
the problem has sen fixed on my end with the latest release.

Can anyone offer suggestions how to improve the Mail performance with Gmail.
As it is, i have messages trailing in up to an hour after they appear on my
phone. Failing that, is there an accessible Mail replacement I should try?

You need to follow the instructions on GMail for POP correctly. It
could be a incorrect port number in your setup. Sorry not home to
check this on my accounts.
