Yup. Makes no sense. I tried your strategy a couple times. Something
is keeping me from making changes that affect the genre table for
purchased movies. In Home Videos I can type in the combo box. In the
purchased movies, I cannot.

A workaround is to create the Genre within the Home Videos grouping of movies.
This should now add it to the main grouping that you can choose from when
manipulating the purchased items. You'll need to modify one of your Home
videos, then go into the purchased ones, set it to the new genr

This works as always in Home Videos. Not in Movies (purchased). If a
genre does not already exist, I cannot type one in. I do not recall if I
could do this in iTunes but then I did not have to learn how to work
with the new changes. This is where I think Apple could have left well

You should just be able to type your desired genre into the field. If the
genre doesn't already exist, then it should be automatically added.
