Like you, I am in transition from Windows to Mac. One thing I have done to help

Mail app somehow needing more power; I use a
Macbook Air with the low end processor and 4GB ram from 2012, and it runs
perfectly. Your Mini has more than enough horsepower, so it has to be a problem
with some files. At least, that's all I can think of.

Keep in mind that speech can be muted even though VoiceOver may be active.
I guess this is what you are implying, but I know that on the iPhone a
specific gesture can mute speech despite the presence of VoiceOver. I would
