Josh, Here is a setting that will let you check the time and date with a simple 2 key command instead of using the Status Menu. I got this from a posting from Ricardo Walker. It works great. Open up Voiceover utility with VO F8. Interact, arrow down to commanders, then stop interacting. VO r
