In Facetime, go under the menu, and you can adjust your audio settings. Just VO
M and right Aero to Video.

I just tried inserting emojis. After finding the one I wanted, I pressed
VO-Space (i.e., Caps lock-Space or Control-Option-Space) and that worked.
VoiceOver announced the inserted emoji, and it was definitely in my document.
