You did not say, but if you are running macOS Sequoia, then this may be due to
a bug that can be fixed as follows:
1. Open VO Utility, and select the Verbosity category.
2. Now, select the Text tab, and navigate to the item labeled “Read Numbers
As”, and select Words from the popup menu.

I wonder what would happen if you turned off cursor tracking. It sounds like
your focus is not in the document itself, but on some sort of status bar or
action element that is updating as you move word by word.

For a while now I have been hearing gobbled gook when I attempt to go word by
word in a document. It says Prosity lt volume but never says the word it’s on.
I called disability support and they didn’t know what to do. Has anyone come
across this? Does anyone have a solution?

Yes it is a bit clunky compared to the Windows version. But the
layout is similar. I am still tweaking and figuring out some issues with

Interact with the sidebar. Do a Vo plus J twice which puts you in
the list of installed apps.

Just about doable but clunky, only to be recommended if you have some specific
need that can't be met by a more native option. Of these, MailMate is the most
viable I'm aware of. But it's IMAP-only, if that matters.
