I think this is a matter of opinion.
Asking which is better, List view or Column view; is like asking which is
better, Chocolate or Vanilla ice cream.
The answer you get, depends on who you ask.

this might be a situation where you have to play with both and see which works
best for you. However, the advantage for you with list view is it’s what you
already know.

Thanks guys. I found the desired command in the list of possible
braille commands. Its labeled "go to linked item". That works fine.
Still tinkering.

Not sure if this depends on how you have Mail setup, but I can move from the
list of messages to the list of folders by pressing Shift+Tab, and back again
with Tab.
I think the original question asked about navigating using a Braille display,
but I’m not sure which keys would substitut
Well, as Herbie said, you can use the "move to linked item” command.
Another possibility is to set up hot spots for the message list and mailbox
list.
If you want to get more complicated and make sure that mail is running, then a
two or three line AppleScript should be able to do this.
