Try checking in your iPhone’s Notification Center.
Unread messages should show in there.

Check in Settings, Display & Brightness to see if there’s anything there about
screen tapping or proximity. Otherwise, I’m not sure as I don’t have one of
those super new iPads to test on.

I have one of the new iPad minis. They unlock by pressing on the touch pad at
the top. However, mine seems to wake up any time I come within 3 feet of it,
even when my hand is nowhere near the touch pad. And if I try to lock it by
putting my finger on the touch pad, it just wakes rig
